In the early 1970s, Sue Coppard organised the first Working Weekends On Organic Farms weekend (the exchange being similar to the kibbutz idea). A few years later whilst travelling, she found that some countries were already operating WWOOF organisations using the acronym Willing Workers On Organic Farms and We’re Welcome On Organic Farms, nowadays some groups use World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. WWOOF means different things to different people, but is understood by many. From these early beginnings, WWOOF grew and there are now many WWOOF organisations around the world, connecting thousands of WWOOF hosts with and thousands of WWOOF volunteers. Each WWOOF group is an independent organisation networking together.

(World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms)」という名称を使っている。
