Source text - French L’enfermement est le point de départ et le principe de base de la mise en scène et de la scénographie. Un parallélépipède (qu’on nomme ‘le Cube’)constitue l’ère de jeu scénique, rien à l’intérieur, le vide… empli par la seule présence des deux comédiens. Les portes sont à l’extérieur de la structure, inaccessibles (hauteur d’env. 4.5m du sol). En ce qui concerne le monte-plats, objet symbolisant le seul lien avec l’extérieur, il entre en
complète opposition avec l’univers scénique «inquiétant» mis en place précédemment. Il apparaîtra sous formes d’animations projetées en vidéo : des formes rectangulaires de couleurs vives défilent de haut en bas (pour rappeler l’importance de la verticalité du monte-plats)lentement, mouvement presque hypnotique qui met en valeur et renforce le domaine de l’abstrait. Le gigantisme de la projection, s’effectuant sur la totalité de la face avant de la toile (4.5mX4.5m) rend compte de cet extérieur qui envahit les personnages de Pinter sans être concret.
En les renvoyant sans cesse à leur propre emprisonnement, le lieu extra scénique n’est qu’un fantasme qui les ronge. Exilés du monde extérieur ressenti comme une menace, voire une mort certaine, « les personnages [de Pinter] s’agitent et parlent entre ces quatre murs qui définissent l’espace de leur évolution» (C. Susini).
Translation - English Enclosure is the threshold and the basic principle for the stage direction and the set design. A built-up parallelepiped we'll call the Cube is the actual theatrical performance surface, an all vacuous cube filled only with the presence of the actors. The doors are unreachable and outside the structure (4.5m height above the stage ground). The dumb waiter, symbolizing the sole connection to the outside world, is in complete opposition to the worrying theatrical universe previously set. The dumb waiter's obtrusions are pop-ups of video screened animations: accounting for the original verticality of a dumb waiter, vividly coloured rectangular shapes are scrolling up and down, in a slow, almost hypnotic and abstract intensifying movement. The gigantic projection, screened on the face surface of the canvas (4.4mX4.5m), is a simulacrum of the invading exterior world without giving out any element of concreteness.
Taking the characters back to their own personal imprisonment, the extra-theatrical space is only a consuming fantasy. Shut out from the menacing, death-sure outdoors: «Pinter's characters jiggle and jabber, in between the four walls that define their own evolution » (C. Susini)
