I was a Russian, Portuguese, and Serbo-Croatian linguist for the US Navy; received highest proficiency pay available. A highlight of that career was providing interpreting services to the fleets during a Russian port visit to Boston.
Later, I acquired state-certification to teach English and Spanish. I have translated a birth-certificate into Ukranian (very similar to Russian), given language-training to a missionary team going to Croatia, and translated, as well as interpreted several pieces of communication into Spanish while teaching for the public school system.
