Translation - English The French liner Vicomte de Bragelonne, a postal ship, was sailing for China. At around eight o¡¦clock in the morning, the third-class deck was still damp from having been washed, but already the seats were all taken. There were French, there were Jews fleeing from Germany, there were Indians, Vietnamese, and of course, Chinese. The ocean breeze already held a hint of searing heat. The hot, parched wind blew the sweat dry on the bodies of the plump, frosting them in a fine layer of salt as if they had just bathed in the Dead Sea of Palestine. It being still morning, the spirits of the passengers had not yet been wilted by the sun and baked into a stupor. They were still lively.
