A year which began with optimism ends in the harsh glare of reality

This was the year the shadow fell. Perhaps we didn't allow ourselves to notice it, but some fin de siècle optimism, even idealism, had seeped into the collective bloodstream during the 90s.
We branded the decade a new era of caring and sharing, an antidote to the avarice and excess of the 80s. By 1997 the country seemed ready for a fresh start and more upbeat about itself than at any time since the 60s: we declared Britannia cool. But in the year 2000 we seem to have had a reality check - to have remembered that every light comes with shade.
Of course the most glaring symbol of the contrast is the dome. It was dreamed up as the incarnation of millennial confidence and hope: instead, it became a monument to British incompetence, vanity and a system of power which allows our governing politicians to make mistake after mistake with no scrutiny until it is too late.
The dome symbolised a more specific fall from grace, too. For the shambolic scenes in Greenwich last New Year's Eve marked the beginning of deep trouble not only for the big tent in east London but also for the big tent known as the Labour party.
Just as the dome was born of shining 90s optimism, only to be felled by a dose of 21st-century realism, so New Labour endured the same fate. The year 2000 was truly an annus horribilis for Tony Blair and his party. From the drubbing the government received last December 31 onwards, this year has been a series of kicks, dents and holes drilled into the once-gleaming façade of New Labour.
Perhaps the decisive vandal was Ken Livingstone, whose humiliation of Frank Dobson in the London mayoral contest was hailed as the lowest point of the Blair premiership (little did we know what was to follow). It exposed to public view what had long been the fatal flaw of New Labour: its control freakery, its tin ear for democracy, its contempt for dissent.

Finaliza el año envuelto en sombras. Aunque quizá no nos permitimos el lujo de disfrutarlo, algo del optimismo inherente a los finales de siglo revitalizó la savia colectiva durante la década de los 90.
Empaquetamos la década bajo la marca “cuidar al prójimo y compartir” como si se tratase antídoto contra la avaricia y los excesos cometidos en los 80. En 1997 el país parecía estar preparado para empezar de nuevo y, con una autoestima de la que no disfrutábamos desde los años 60, declaramos a Gran Bretaña como un país con glamour. El año 2000 nos devolvió, sin embargo, a la cruda realidad para recordarnos que no es oro todo lo que reluce.
Sin lugar a duda, el símbolo más destacado de este contraste es el Dome. El Dome se concibió como la encarnación de la confianza y la esperanza del nuevo milenio y, en su lugar, terminó convirtiéndose en una oda a la incompetencia y vanidad Británicas y a un sistema de poder que permite a la clase gobernante cometer fallo tras fallo sin ningún tipo de escrutinio hasta que ya es demasiado tarde.
El Dome también ha simbolizado una caída en desgracia. Las escenas estrambólicas que se vivieron en Greenwich en el fin de año pasado marcaron el comienzo de los malos tiempos, no sólo para la gran carpa del Este de Londrés sino también para la gran carpa en la que se ha convertido el Partido Laborista.
Así como el Dome surgió del esplendoroso optimismo de los 90, seguido de una dosis de realismo de la mano del nuevo siglo, el Nuevo Laborismo sufrió la misma suerte. El año 2000 fue realmente un annus horribilis para Tony Blair y su partido político. Desde la embestida recibida por el gobierno el pasado 31 de Diciembre en adelante, este año nos ha dejado con una sucesión de patadas, mordiscos y agujeros taladrados en la antaño reluciente fachada del Nuevo Laborismo.
Quizá el villano mayor fue Ken Livingstone, cuya humillación de Frank Dobson en las elecciones a la alcaldía de Londrés fue aclamada como la caída más estrepitosa del estrellato de Blair. Sin todavía imaginar lo que estaba por venir, se hizo de dominio público el talón de aquiles del Nuevo Laborismo: su ansia compulsiva de control, su desdén por los procedimientos democráticos y su menosprecio a la disensión.
