L’AW139 est un hélicoptère bimoteur de taille moyenne pouvant transporter jusqu’à 15 passagers construit par le fabricant italien AgustaWestland filiale de Finmeccanica.. D’abord conçu et développé conjointement avec Bell Helicopter et commercialisé sous le nom de Agusta-Bell AB139, Bell s’est retiré du projet et l’appareil a été rebaptisé AW139. Le prototype a volé pour la première fois le 3 février 2001 tandis que la certification des autorités italiennes a été obtenu en juin 2003 suivi des autorités américaines (FAA) en décembre 2004. Le premier exemplaire de production a été livré à l’entreprise italienne Elilario en mars 2004 et le second au gouvernement du Namibie en septembre 2004.
L’AW139 est muni d’un rotor principal de 5 pales tandis que le rotor de queue en a 4. Le compartiment à bagages de 3.4 m³ est accessible de l’intérieur ainsi que de l’extérieur Du à la puissance de réserves des moteurs Pratt & Whitney Canada, la sécurité en vol est assurée en cas de panne sur un moteur étant donné qu’il est certifié pour décoller sur un seul moteur à son poids maximum.
L’appareil est disponible en version militaire et civile et il est capable de transporter jusqu’à 15 passagers ou 2 500 kg de chargement. The AW 139, a twin-engine medium-sized helicopter capable of carrying up to 15 passengers, is built by Italian manufacturer Agusta Westland, a subsidiary of Finmeccanica. It was initially designed and developed jointly with Bell Helicopters and sold as the Agusta-Bell AB139 until Bell withdrew from the project and it was renamed the AW139. The prototype maiden flight took place on February 3, 2001 and certification was obtained from the Italian authorities in June 2003 and from the American FAA in December 2004. The first AW 139 to roll off the production line was delivered to Italian company Elilario in March 2004.
The AW139 is equipped with a main rotor of five blades whilst the tail rotor has four.The 3.4 cubic meter baggage compartment can be accessed both from inside and outside the aircraft.In-flight safety is assured thanks to the reserve power provided by the Pratt&Whitney Canada engines : in the event of failure of one engine the helicopter is certified for take off at its maximum weight on a single engine.
The AW139 helicopter is available in both military and civil versions and can carry up to 15 passengers or a 2500kg load. Civil applications include transportation of passengers, police personnel and cargo, as well as offshore transportation, search and rescue missions and a fire fighting role. The military version is capable of carrying 15 soldiers or 6 stretchers with 4 medical personnel and can be fitted with machine guns, rocket launchers and air-to-air missiles attached to two external dismountable support frames.
The final assembly of the AW319 is carried out at the Agusta Westland facilities at Vergiate in Italy.There is also an assembly line in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA) and the helicopters made there are called the US139 but are exactly the same as the Italian version. The first American-assembled helicopter was delivered in December 2006.
