The previous chapters have mainly faced the making up and management of the information and data; this and the following chapters will instead explore the functonality that permit to coordinate the users’ work.
The model put at disposal by PORTOFINO for this purpose its called Workflow. Commonly, we refer to workflow when we speak of processes or business procedures , of courses, of practices of the information life cycle. On the next level, the blow mold can describe how in a company a certain procedure occurs, which are the steps that make it up, in what order they must be executed, and which are the users’ typologies involved (think as a comparison to the classic flow charts that describe an algorithm through a series of steps); at the lower level, the system’s users can utilize the workflow created to act on the data.
The identification of the workflow occurs in the drafting phase of the system’s requirements. The blow mold interviews the future application users, analyzes their working processes and the way in which these fall in relation to the data, and he idetifies the main steps.
At a more technical level, at the base of the workflow in PORTOFINO there are some state and transition concepts. The state is an attribute associated to a class that describes the actual condition of an object, or rather, at which point of it’s workflow it is found. The transition rappresents the change of status, and it is a procedure that the system’s users can perform to bring the objects from one state to another and advance with the work. Think for example, at a document’s approval process: The class Documents can be found in a Draft, Reviewed, or Approved state and the transitions Revise, Approve allow to proceed with the process.
The model of the data and the model of the workflow meet in the Quality Workflow. This type of quality allows for the memorization of the phases. On the quality workflow, or rather, on the values of workflow’s attibute (the phases), it is possible to define the transitions, to create the workflows requested by the system.
