Japanese to English: 五行歌
Source text - Japanese 五行歌について説明しようとして、私は、外国では日本で言っている理論が使いにくいと思いました。日本には、短歌という1400年の伝統を持つ権威ある短詩があります。この短詩が五句で構成されており、その音数（シラブル数に当たる）が厳格に定められているのです。
一行目は五、二行目は七、三行目は五、四行目は七、五行目は七、となっています。
五行歌理論は、このがんじがらめの定則を使うと、歌が同じような調子になることから、五句は自由なほうがいいという理論を立てたのでした。
しかし、外国には、その禁酒法のような厳格な規則がないため、自由がいいという私の理論も、あまり意味がないのです。
詩歌について専門的な知識を求める人がいるなら、私のさまざまな本を読んでいただければいいと思いますが、外国の人々に五行歌を知っていただくためには、理論を言っても仕方がない、むしろ、サンプルを見ていただき、サンプルに応じて、五行歌について私の思うところを述べたほうがいいと思い始めました。

Translation - English It occurred to me that it would be difficult to explain the concept of Gogyohka abroad by repeating the same theory that I use to explain it to Japanese readers. In Japan there is a 1,400 year-old tradition of short verse. This form of verse is composed of five phrases and the number of sounds (syllables) is strictly determined. The first line is five syllables, the second seven, the third five, the fourth seven and the fifth seven. I came to the conclusion that by adhering to these rules, all poems written in that form take on a certain uniformity, and that it is more interesting to write five phrases without these structural restraints.
Non-Japanese poetry, however, tends not to be dictated by such strict rules, so my theory about using a freer structure to create more expressive poems does not carry so much weight outside Japan.
If there are any readers with specialist knowledge of poetry then I would be very happy for them to read the various books I have written on the subject, but for the purposes of introducing non-Japanese to Gogyohka, rather than writing about the theory, I think it is more effective to illustrate my thoughts with some examples of the poetry itself. To this end I have divided up this book into various genres of Gogyohka and added my commentary where appropriate.

I have the JLPT level 1 qualification and have spent three years living in Japan, during which time I worked as a translator based at the Gifu Prefecture Board of Education. I also worked for a publishing company in Tokyo, translating books about Japanese pop culture into English, while working as a freelance translator for a poetry publishing company.
I specialise in literary or journalistic translation, but have a year of experience of translating government documents and educational directives.
