Market research company Gartner has been tracking global relational database market for a number of years. According to their report published in May 2006, the revenue of global relational database software in 2005 has increased by 8.3% from 2004, reaching 13.8 billion US dollars. Open source solutions have becoming more and more popular and they show the largest growth because there is continual improvement in the functionalities and scalability of these products. More relational database tools with support services are available and they begin to challenge the main proprietary products. Among the various platforms, Linux has the fastest growth (84%). On the contrary, there are signs of slowdown in the UNIX platforms which indicate that Linux could replace UNIX in production system running mission critical applications. Gartner estimated that in 2010, Linux database could support 35,000 concurrent online transaction users and over 30TB database volume, matching the performance by mainframe database. |
