After the disappointing 1.8% real GDP growth of 2005, the economy recovered
strongly in 2006 helped by a rate cut by the Bank of England in August 2005,
exceptionally strong labour force growth due to immigration, and the vigorous
resurgence in house prices. Consumer spending and business investment have
been the main contributors to the GDP recovery with growth of 0.7% quarteron-
quarter for Q1-Q3, reaching 2.7% year-on-year in July-September, and an
estimated 2.6% for the year as a whole. Inflation picked up against the
background of higher oil prices (until August) and double-digit money and credit
growth in the banking system. In response, the Bank raised rates twice (in
August and November) to 5%. For the year the CPI is forecast to show 2.3%,
slightly above the mid point of the Bank of England’s target range.
