I worked in the NHS, both full- and part-time, in a number of nursing roles from 1997 until 2009. A significant portion of my NHS career was spent in Cardiology, including 2 years working in a coronary care unit, but I have also worked in many other specialist areas during placements and as part of the relief nurse bank. I have, therefore, a broad working knowledge of medical terminology, with more specialised knowledge of cardiology, obstetrics and fertility medicine.
More recently, I worked in local government between 2006 and 2014, firstly as the Customer Liaison Officer, and then as Technical Projects Officer. As such, I have extensive working knowledge of customer service, graphic design, print production, reprographics and technical project management. Also, as a member of the graphic design and print production team, part of my role was to proofread and edit documentation produced by, and used by, the Council.
I have been a part-time freelance translator, copy editor and proofreader since 2008. I have worked on a range of documents, including technical papers (one of which has won two awards), tourism literature, medical texts (such as clinical practice guidelines) and official documents (particularly in relation to property purchase in Spain).
I have completed all the coursework for the MA Translation Studies at Portsmouth University, achieving an award of either distinction or merit for every assessment. I am currently on a maternity break, but will return next year to submit my dissertation.
I am particularly interested in translating medical research papers.
I can supply example translations upon request.
Services I offer:
Translation from French to English - Text will be translated according to the given brief. Text will be formatted as agreed.
Translation from Spanish to English - Text will be translated according to the given brief. Text will be formatted as agreed.
English proofreading - this involves checking the document for consistency in usage and presentation, and accuracy in text, images and layout. Other errors will be noted during proofreading, but will only be corrected during copy-editing.
Please see here for clarification about what proofreading does and does not entail
English copy-editing - amongst other things, editing involves checking the text for errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, paragraph layout, style and usage, and also corrects any missing punctuation, very long sentences and overuse of italics, bold, capitals, exclamation marks and the passive voice. It ensures that the text is cohesive and coherent.
