Source text - English Over the past two decades, a national debate has raged about intelligence: what is it, who has it and how do we measure it? The argument is fueled by findings from two camps of research. There are the psychometricians, who look at the statistics and biology of IQ and try to determine how much of intelligence is innate. And then there are the cultural ecologists, who focus on environment and point out the mutability of intelligence and the unfairness of IQ tests. Unfortunately, the two lines of study seldom meet because their methods are so different. Rarely does one camp communicate with the other.
That leaves most ordinary citizens on the outside of the debate, free to cling to their personal beliefs about intelligence. The only trouble is our theories of intelligence are too narrow¬ly constructed. They tend to ignore real data, even though a voluminous literature exists on the topic.
At the very least, intelligence can be defined as the ability for complex thinking and reasoning. One thing the research shows for sure: much of the ability for complex reasoning depends on the situation. A person can be a genius at the racetrack but a dolt in the stock market, even though both pursuits require comparable mental activities. But the knowledge is organized in the mind differently in different domains, so what a person knows about the track can lie fallow on Wall Street.
I would like to present a dozen research-supported facts about intelligence that most people, including some IQ experts…
Translation - Russian На протяжении двух последний десятилетий разразился национальный спор об интеллекте: что это, у кого он есть и как нам измерять его? Спор накаляется благодаря изысканиям двух "лагерей" исследования. Это психометристы, - которые наблюдают за статистикой и биологией IQ и пытаются установить, какое количество интеллекта является врождённым. И культурные экологи, которые сосредотачивают своё внимание на окружающей среде и указывают на изменчивость интеллекта и на неверность IQ-тестов. К несчастью, эти две линии изучения редко пересекаются, т.к. их методы слишком различны. Один "лагерь" редко общается с другим.
Это оставляет большинство обычных горожан вне обсуждения проблемы, без собственных представлений об интеллекте. Единственная загвоздка в том, что наши теории интеллекта слишком узко устроены. Они имеют тенденцию пренебрегать истинными фактами, хотя по этой теме существует масса литературы.
В наименьшей степени, интеллект может быть определён как способность к комплексному мышлению и рассуждению. Один факт исследования показывает наверняка: многое в способности к комплексному рассуждению зависит от ситуации. Человек может быть гениальным на трэке для мотогонок и полным болваном на фондовой бирже, хотя эти занятия требуют сопоставимых умственных усилий. Но знания организованы в уме по-разному в различных областях, поэтому то, что человек знает о трэке, может быть совершенно невостребованным на Уолл стрит.
