Die folgende Doppelkorrespondenz zwischen Eduard Bertz (1853 - 1931) und dem englischen Sexualwissenschaftler Edward Carpenter (1844 - 19290) bzw. dem schweizerischen Schriftsteller und Journalisten Josef Viktor Widmann (1842 - 1911) präsentiert auf privater Ebene wie unter dem Brennglas zwei sich ergänzende Gesichter des Schriftstellers aus Potsdam: das des Walt-Whitman-Kenners und Kritikers sowie das des Philosophen. Zeugnisse dieses intimen Charakters sind in seinem Falle rar. Die Briefe an den engen englischen Freund George Gissing sind bis auf wenige Ausnahmen verschollen, doch erlauben dessen Antworten1 kleine Einblicke in Bertz 'Leben und Werk. In Briefen an den Jugendfreund Heinrich Rehfeldt von 1880 2 ging es vorrangig um Erziehungsfragen; in noch unveröffentlichten Schreiben an den Herausgeber und Vereinskollegen Heinz Brendicke von 1892 waren hauptsächlich lokal- und regionalhistorische Aspekte der Mark Brandenburg von Interesse.
Jetzt, 1906 bis 1908, wird vorrangig über Homosexualität gesprochen - im Vordergrund steht dabei nicht Bertz‘ eigene, die er erst 1905 gegnüber einem „Hochverehrten Geheimrat“ 3 bekannte, sondern die, die er Walt Whitman unterstellte. Zudem gibt Bertz Carpenter Hinweise für dessen Publikationen in Deutschland. In dem Gedankenaustausch mit Widman geht es hingegen auch um dessen Dramen „Maikäfer-Komödie“ und „Der Heilige und die Tiere“, um Philosophisches wie die „tragische Weltanschauung“ um den Whitmanologen Johannes Schlaf. Wie die Korrespondenzen begannen ist in beiden Fällen nicht bekannt; als Auftakt soviel lässt sich mit großer Gewissheit sagen, dienten Bertz‘ zwei jüngste und wichtigste Veröffentlichungen zu Walt Whitman - der US-amerikanische Schriftsteller wurde damit 15 Jahre nach seinem Tod zu einem stillen Bindeglied zwischen allen drei Briefschreibern.
Carpenter dürfte zu einer Kontaktaufnahme mit Bertz inspiriert worden sein.

The following exchange of letters between Eduard Bertz (1853 – 1931) and the British sexual scientist Edward Carpenter (1844 – 19290, and also between Bertz and the Swiss writer and journalist Josef Viktor Widmann (1842 – 1911) at the private level show clearly the two different faces of the writer from Potsdam: that of the expert on and critic of Walt-Whitman, and that of a philosopher. It is rare to find anything that gives an intimate insight into his character. Apart from a few exceptions the letters to his close English friend George Gissing have disappeared, but his friend’s replies1 allow for some insight into Bertz’s life and work. In letters to his childhood friend Heinrich Rehfeldt of 18802 mainly educational issues were discussed, while in his so far unpublished correspondence of 1892 with the editor and fellow member of the association Heinz Brendicke the main subjects were local and regional historic aspects of the Mark Brandenburg.
Then, from 1906 – 1908, he focused on homosexuality – not on his own which he had only admitted to an “esteemed privy councilor”3 in 1905 but on the presumed homosexuality of Walt Whitman. Furthermore, Bertz assisted Carpenter with information concerning the publication of his (Carpenter’s) works in Germany. In his correspondence with Widman, they exchanged ideas about the latter’s plays “Maikäfer-Komödie” and “Der Heilige und die Tiere”, philosophical aspects such as the tragic worldview, the “tragische Weltanschauung”, and the views of the expert on Whitman, Johannes Schlaf. In both cases it is not known how the correspondence began, but it can be said with great certainty that Bert’s most recent and important publications about Walt Whitman played a role in it. Thus, 15 years after his death, the American writer also became the silent link between all three correspondents.
Carpenter probably had been inspired to get in contact with Bertz.

Einführung
Mit dem Einsatz der neueren Mehrkammerdialysatlösungen mit reduzierter Konzentration von Glukoseabbauprodukten (GDP) scheint eine zusätzliche Reduktion der Infektrate möglich. Mehrere Arbeiten belegen toxische Effekte auf das Mesothel und somit eine potentielle Störung der lokalen Immunantwort durch GDP (3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10). Insofern liegt es nahe, dass durch die Verwendung dieser Peritonealdialysatlösungen die Infektrate gesenkt werden kann. Die vorliegende Studie vergleicht die Häufigkeit von Peritonitiden und Exitinfekten vor und nach Einführung GDP-armer Lösungen.
Material und Methodik
Es wurden 120 CAPD-Patienten der nephrologischen Ambulanz Heidelberg zwischen 1990 und 2005 retrospektiv untersucht. Die Umstellung auf GDP-arme, biokompatible Dialysatlösungen erfolgte im Jahre 2000. Hiervon wurden 67 mit dem herkömmlichen, 53 mit dem neuen System behandelt. Sämtliche Patienten (auch diejenigen mit den herkömmlichen Dialysatlösungen) verwendeten bereits Doppelbeutelsysteme mit Y-Technik. Es gab während der beiden Beobachtungszeiträume keine Änderung bezüglich ärztlicher oder pflegerischer Therapiestandards.
Die Häufigkeit von Peritonitiden oder Infektionen des Katheteraustritts wurde anhand der Aktenlage bestimmt. Als Peritonitis galt dabei eine signifikante Erhöhung der Leukozytenzahl im Dialysat mit klinischen Zeichen der Peritonitis – mit oder ohne Keimnachweis. Zur Überprüfung der Homogenität beider zu vergleichender Gruppen wurden zusätzlich die Parameter Alter bei Therapiebeginn, Geschlecht, Diabetes mellitus und nephrologische Grundkrankheit erfasst.
Die statistische Auswertung erfolgte mit dem Wilcoxon-Test zur Überprüfung der Gleichwertigkeit beider Therapiegruppen. Die Ereignishäufigkeit wurde mit dem Fisher-Test sowie mit dem Chi-Quadrat-Test bestimmt bzw. verglichen. Ein p-Wert kleiner als 0,05 wurde als signifikant angesehen.
Translation - English Effects of peritoneal dialysis solutions low in GDPs on peritonitis and exit-site infection rates
Introduction
With the use of the more recently developed dialysates low in glucose degradation products (GDPs) provided in multi-compartment systems, a further reduction of the infection rate seems to be possible. Many publications describe toxic effects of GDPs on mesothelial cells, which consequently result in a potentially negative impact on the local immune response (3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10). Thus, it stands to reason to assume that the infection rate can be reduced by using these peritoneal dialysis fluids. The present study compares the incidence of peritonitis and exit-site infections before and after introducing fluids low in GDPs.
Materials and Methods
Between 1990 and 2005 a total of 120 CAPD-patients were studied retrospectively in the renal outpatient clinic of Heidelberg. Switching to biocompatible dialysis solutions low in GDPs took place in the year 2000. Of the patients 67 were treated with the conventional dialysis solutions, and 53 received the new dialysates. All patients (also those using conventional dialysates) were already using the double bag system with the Y-set. During the observation period neither medical standards nor nursing standards concerning treatment changed.
The incidence of peritonitis and catheter exit-site infections was assessed by evaluating documentary evidence. Diagnosis of peritonitis was based on a significant increase of the leukocytes in the dialysis fluid in conjunction with the typical, clinical symptoms – with or without a positive test for pathogenic cultures. Criteria for determining exit-site infection included clinical diagnosis or a smear testing positive for pathogenic cultures. In order to verify whether the two patient groups to be compared were homogenous, the data obtained for each patient additionally included such parameters as the age at initiation of treatment, sex, presence of diabetes mellitus, and original renal disease.
For the statistical evaluation and for analyzing the homogeneity of both treatment groups the Wilcoxon test was used. The incidence was calculated or compared with the help of the Fisher test
and the Chi-squared test respectively. A p value < 0.05 was taken to be significant.

Thus, if convicted, she might face imprisonment of up to four years. However, if she is sentenced to less than two years of imprisonment, she will not have to serve time in prison. Judge José Castro of the provincial court in Palma de Mallorca assumes that there is sufficient evidence to prove that the Infanta was a „necessary co-worker“, involved in the allegedly fraudulent business activities of her husband Iñaki Urdangarin. In this context bogus companies are supposed to have received more than six million euros from the region of Valencia and the Balearic Islands without providing any appropriate service in return.
