Norwegian to English: Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion proposal announcement
Translation - English The Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion is proposing to replace the two existing arrangements for work injury compensation with a single common labour injury insurance.
"The proposal presents a clear simplification in relation to the existing two-track system, which is experienced by many as complicated and unintelligible. We are preparing for a stronger involvement of the working life parties and are undertaking necessary measures to ensure an equal treatment perspective in the regulations," says Labour and Social Inclusion Minister Dag Terje Andersen.
"A special rule for acute injuries incurred by lifting persons gives the proposal a clear equal treatment character," says Dag Terje Andersen.
Today a person who has incurred a work injury must conform to two different regulatory structures and two authorities in one work injury case. The proposal which the Ministry now submits for a hearing includes a change to one regulatory structure, where a newly-created labour injury entity shall decide claims for compensation.
"Some individuals have received compensation in one of the arrangements, but denial in the other. I can understand that one sees this as unreasonable, and we are doing something about that now," says the cabinet minister.
Danish to English: Electricity consumption and pricing
Translation - English The Free Market
Electricity is purchased on the electricity free market from the electricity trading firms. All electricity sources compete in the market, from large power plants to the individual windmill. If you have not expressly chosen a company, you will automatically receive power from the local electricity company, which has a so-called public utility license.
If you have not made a special agreement with your electricity company, you will receive power at a price that applies for one quarter of a year. The price in a given quarter reflects the current prices on the electricity market, and the prices are regulated by the Energy Regulatory Authority.
A profit must not be earned from supplying electricity. The price you pay covers therefore only the actual costs along with the cost for investing in necessary infrastructure.
Swedish to English: Government delivers proposal to Parliament
Translation - English Government delivers proposal to Parliament regarding solution for scarcity of the civic registration number
There are not enough civic registration numbers for all who must have them. The Government proposes therefore that a civic registration number can be designated with an adjacent day in the same month in those cases when a civic registration number is lacking for a certain birth date. This proposal is being delivered today to Parliament.
Primarily January 1st or July 1st (currently eight days in all) are lacking civic registration numbers for certain years. That is because many immigrants to Sweden are allotted civic registration numbers with these birth dates. By making it possible to designate an adjacent day in the same month in the civic registration number when there are insufficient birth registration numbers for a certain birth date, the scarcity of civic registration numbers will be resolved. At the same time, the number’s design and contents will remain unchanged, which means big savings for society and the undertaking.
Norwegian to English (University of Minnesota, verified) Norwegian (Bokmal) to English (University of Minnesota, verified) Norwegian (Nynorsk) to English (University of Minnesota, verified)
My family roots are in Norway, Sweden, and Finland. My father's mother emigrated from Eidsvoll Verk in Norway, my father's father was a Swedish American, and my mother's parents emigrated from western Finland. I have a B.A. in Scandinavian Languages and Geography and a J.D. cum laude, both from the University of Minnesota. I taught Norwegian for one year at the University while a student and for several years as an adult education instructor in local schools. I worked for several years as a commercial insurance underwriter and then as a corporate risk manager. I practiced law for five years in employment law, environmental law, and criminal defense. Prior to becoming a full-time translator, I was the executive director of a nonprofit organization providing environmental education, environmental service learning, and outdoor recreation programs to local schools.
With the widespread availability of Internet streaming services, I am able to watch and listen to television and radio broadcasts daily from NRK (the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) and SVT (the Swedish Television Company), as well as read several national and local newspapers from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. This is very helpful in maintaining my language skills and in keeping current on events. As a student I spent a great deal of time reading Norwegian source materials from the era when written Norwegian and written Danish were very similar. This experience makes translating from Danish almost as easy for me as working from Norwegian.
Like many Norwegians, Swedes, and Finns, I have a strong interest in outdoor pursuits. I was a search-and-rescue dog handler for seventeen years, and I am a lifelong nordic skier, canoeist, and backpacker.
