In order to determine which proposed source texts are the suitable for use in ProZ.com contests, proposers and participants are encouraged to "highlight" (like contest entry tagging) and discuss proposed source texts. A good contest source text should pose a reasonable challenge to translators, while allowing for "separation". Refer to the "Propose a source text" overview page for all source text proposal guidelines.

From "Tales of Hulan River" (呼兰河传), Chapter 1, by Xiao Hong (1911–1942)

Possibility for separation
A one-line refrain. How to keep the bare, deadpan rhythm? "Their hands split from the cold" vs "Frost cracked their hands" vs "Human hands were frozen open."
Good challenge
The absurd scene of concrete: The wooden tofu plate was frozen so tightly to the ground. "Stuck" / "glued" / "fused to the earth"; the detached final clause "被冻在地上了" needs its own beat.
Good challenge
掌子 is NE-China dialect for the crust of ice that builds up on shoe soles. The metaphor "stamping on an egg" is deliberately made rough. Should you polish it up or keep its rustic flavor?
Well-written
Flat, matter-of-fact social observation: strangers pocket the old man's fallen buns. Bitter, not moralising. Tone is the challenge, not lexis.
Possibility for separation
The punchline. The frozen earth is personified as having "swallowed" the buns, the old man's euphemism for strangers stealing them. Renderings range from "swallowed" to "gulped" to "opened up and devoured". The final choice defines the whole piece.
