Bonfire Night takes place on the 5th of November every year, and is celebrated with bonfires, fireworks and stalls selling sweets. Most towns have their own fireworks displays, as well as a large bonfire. On the 5th of November and the nearest weekend, the sky around towns and cities is full of fireworks. Bonfire Night is only celebrated in the UK and has historical links to the past, although most people forget this in the modern celebration.
In 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Fortunately, he was caught and the plot failed. From then on people in the UK have celebrated his failure on the 5th of November. The story of Bonfire Night is remembered by this short rhyme
I am a native English speaker with a BA in French and Japanese, as well as over 10 years of experience as a freelance translator of French and Japanese to English (UK, US, CA and AU).
