English to Spanish: Image-Guided Surgery General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical (general)
Source text - English VV spine is a wireless navigation system, which means that unlike traditional navigation systems, no cables, batteries, or foot switches are required. Instead, the system uses passive marker spheres, and two infrared cameras which emit infrared flashes.
The passive marker spheres are mounted to each surgical instrument, and to a reference array which is securely attached to the patient’s bone structure. Each passive marker sphere reflects the infrared flashes from the cameras, creating an individual infrared reflection image.
These images are digitized by both cameras, each of which “sees” the marker spheres from a different angle. The software then uses this information to calculate the three-dimensional position of the instrument marker spheres relative to the position of the reference array marker spheres.
English to Spanish: Diastolic heart failure General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Cardiology
Source text - English Congestive heart failure (CHF), which is defined as the inability of the left ventricle to generate an adequate cardiac output at rest and during exercise while operating at normal left ventricular filling pressures, is usually associated with impaired left ventricular systolic function. However, symptoms of CHF may arise in the absence of any systolic abnormality. In these patients, contractile function is normal or even enhanced, and diastolic dysfunction is the principal cause of the classic symptoms of dyspnea and fatigue (1-4).
With abnormal diastolic function, the left ventricle is stiff and does not fill adequately at normal diastolic pressures. This leads to either decreased left ventricular end-diastolic volumes with a fall in cardiac output or a compensatory rise in left ventricular filling pressure to maintain cardiac output, which can lead to pulmonary venous hypertension. This syndrome has been termed diastolic heart failure.
The prevalence of diastolic heart failure in the community is unknown. Among patients with symptoms of CHF, systolic performance is normal in 14 % to 41 % (5-8). Heart failure caused by diastolic dysfunction is particularly high in elderly patients (5).
