English to Italian: Mushrooms and Cardiovascular diseases General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Cardiology
Source text - English Nowadays, cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of
death across many industrialized countries. Thus, Mensink et
al. have emphasized that cardiovascular diseases have a
multifactorial aetiology being mainly caused by atherosclerosis,
and have identified potential risk biomarkers such as
lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, haemostatic function,
oxidative damage, homocysteine metabolism, and blood
pressure. The hypocholesterolemic action of edible mushrooms
has been reported, by Kaneda and
Tokuda, who studied cholesterol lowering properties of
Lentinus edodes, Auricularria polytricha, Flammulina velutipes
and Agaricus bisporus. Additionally investigations from Bobek
and coworkers were focused on the hypocholesterolemic
effects of Pleurotus ostreatus, which revealed a lipid
peroxidation inhibition and a suppression of the activity of
HMG-CoA reductase in both normocholestolemic and hypercholesterolemic
animal models. Indeed, some competitive
inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase have been isolated from
different mushrooms such as eritadenine from L. edodes and meviolin from Pleurotus sp. Besides, some mushrooms
have shown hypotensive effect when blood pressure is
already high. On the other hand, the presence of
antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds
in mushrooms might be clinically relevant in the
management of heart and circulation health complications.
There are some mushroom components involved in cardiovascular
diseases prevention or treatment (proteins, lipids,
vitamins, fibers, phenolic compounds and minerals). However,
the implicated mechanisms are not yet completely
elucidated.
