Extracting text from .stl (Softel Swift) files ?

I am supposed to open a few subtitle files. They are in .stl format, I guess EBU, and I just need to extract the text (time code not needed).

Are they text files? Oct 13, 2004

I mean can you open them with Notepad and read the contents?
Then the question would only be how complicated it will be.

I can open them and read in NotePad, but words are interspersed with BIN codes represented as small squares, that cannot be replaced automatically bt NP nor Word. I ended up finding the very nice freeware bintext (http://www.foundstone.com/) which performed the task beautifully.
