Spanish term

certificado

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
I've just been talking about "títulos", which in the context was referring to certificates for degrees and diplomas (see: http://www.uab.es/servlet/Satellite?cid=1096477426235&pagena...

Now it's talking about "certificados", which is referring to a document certifying one of the following:
"El certificado puede ser del tipo:
a) académico personal;
b) traslado de expediente académico;
c) por programas de intercambio;
d) otros."

If I was going in to French I'd use attestation, but according to my dictionaries, the sense of the noun in English is the process of attesting and not the "certificate" itself.

If it was just for the text, I'd could just keep referring to it as a certificate, but I'm going to need something not too long to put in the menu in the left margin.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com May 31, 2005:
Rooney Have a look at the link. It's clearly referring to the paper they give you to justify you've earned a degree. Are you saying you'd call the piece of paper a "degree" in US English? It sounds strange to me.
Rooney May 30, 2005:
Unless the situation is different in the UK (or whever your target audience is), might I suggest that you use degree for titulo, and certificate for certificado? There may be other infomation here I am missing, but this would seem to solve the problem..
Rooney May 30, 2005:
Hi Timothy--in the US, with the exception of the transcript documents showing that one has completed a degree are simply called a degree, or diploma, as the case may be. I've never seen a diploma or college degree called a certificate. (cont)
Susan Andrew May 30, 2005:
What about simply university qualifications?
Carmen Schultz May 30, 2005:
I found several sites that had "proof of studies" for referring to "proof of the general academic record". If you need another term that means certificate, you have several options such as "transcription," "proof of studies," etc.
Carmen Schultz May 30, 2005:
If referring to transcript (academic record)then "transcripcin" would be adequate.
Carmen Schultz May 30, 2005:
It wasn't clear what you wanted for sure.I was thinking along the lines of proof of... (e.g., proof of citizenship,etc.). Your best bet is probably certificate if it relates to academic work. Are you referring to the academic record/transcript or 1 class?
Non-ProZ.com May 30, 2005:
Carmen I'm looking for something that can refer to the piece of paper they give you. I've had a quick look at some dictionaries, and "proofs" doesn't seem to fit the bill.
Non-ProZ.com May 30, 2005:
Susan Thanks. Degree certificate sounds natural, but some of the courses are diplomas rather than degrees. Maybe university, but technically the "certificados" are also "university certificates". I could go for "course certificates" though.
Carmen Schultz May 30, 2005:
Do you not like "proof"? This would be equivalent to "constancia" or "attestation"
Non-ProZ.com May 30, 2005:
Xenia It's Spanish to English.
Non-ProZ.com May 30, 2005:
Jorge Rodrigues If you're going to go for the obvious answer, could you at least justify it. It's all well and good saying "this is it", but you haven't solved the problem of having the same translation for two different concepts. Do you suggest I have "certificates" twice in the same menu?

academic certificate

What about calling the first ones university certificates / degree certificates and the second ones simply academic certificates or possibly academic record. It's obviously difficult because it all seems to translate as certificate in English.

la constancia

constancia gives the idea of the French "attestation" and you could use it without the article (constancia) if you need space
