polio vaccine

National Vaccination Days
Iraq National Vaccination Days
On Tuesday, July 22, the U.S. Government, the Iraq Ministry of Health, and UNICEF will partner with local healthcare providers across Iraq for the second National Vaccination Day. The goal of the National Vaccination Days campaign is to vaccinate all Iraqi children age 5 and younger before the end of the year. Based on past results, officials expect thousands of parents to bring their children for the free vaccinations to prevent measles, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, tuberculosis, Hepatitis-B and polio.

With implementation of the ***National Vaccination Days*** and public participation, polio vaccine coverage reached 90.1% for children 3 years and older. Due to the mass mobilization in 1984, the coverage of measles vaccination among 1-year-olds was 80% greater than it had been in 1983 -- the highest ever achieved in the country for this vaccine.

Editorial Note: Since 1988, all six WHO regions have reported substantial progress toward poliomyelitis eradication, and poliomyelitis has apparently been completely eliminated from one region. *** In the Region of the Americas, three major strategies were used to eliminate poliomyelitis: 1) achievement of high vaccination coverage; 2) maintenance of sensitive systems of clinical and laboratory surveillance; and 3) implementation of supplementary vaccination activities, including ***national vaccination days*** biannually for all children below a specified age (usually age 5 years, regardless of prior vaccination status) and door-to-door vaccination campaigns in areas with a high incidence of poliomyelitis cases and/or low vaccination coverage (3).
