Law/Patents
Law: Contract(s)
Hi there. From the quote below it's clear what is meant by assistente/assistencia, but I'm not sure what the specific term would be in English. I don't know whether 'assistant' in English would give the right sense.
"Diante de tais fatos, não restou a ora assistente outra alternativa, senão ingressar com o presente pedido de assistência, com fulcro no artigo 50 da lei adjetiva civil, que autoriza a intervenção de terceiro que tiver interesse jurídico em que a sentença seja favorável a uma das partes. "

Comment: "This was a tough call. I have decided to go with Antonio's answer, but thanks very much for the research, rhandler. In this case I think privity applies more specifically to contracts, especially concerning property rights, whereas this is an appeal filed against the health supervision body. "

privy / privity
Here's how the "Merriam Webster's Dictionary of Law" defines these terms:
privy (pl. privies): one having privity; esp.: one who acquires an interest in the subject matter (as property) of prior or pending litigation and is bound by the judgement as if he or she were a party of the action.
privity (pl. -ties): 1) the direct connection or relationship between parties to a contract or transaction ... 2-a) a mutual or successive interest esp. in the same rights of property (as by inheritance or purchase); 2-b) an interest in a transaction, contract or esp. action that does not derive from direct participation but from a relationship to one of the parties or from having an interest identical to one in the original subject matter; 3) private or joint knowledge of a private matter; esp. awareness (as of wrongdoing) implying concurrence.
