The 2001 Balandra is a blend of old vine Grenache and Carignan (60-year old vines), and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in American oak and bottled unfiltered. It possesses abundant quantities of toasty oak intermixed with crushed rocks, violets, raspberries, and black cherry fruit. Tasting like a Pinot Noir on steroids, it reveals good texture and purity as well as a long, moderately tannic finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. -R.P. (#159)
