Spanish term

levantar (en este contexto)

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Software COEXISTENCE DESIGN

---

At first I interpreted "levantar" as "releasing," but now it just doesn't seem to work.

My client is not available this weekend. Please help me with this term!!

TIA :)

Discussion

Dear all: This is one of those cases where you think it's unfair to reward just one of those who helped you out.
As I submitted your answers to my client, I am giving the Kudoz to the one they chose to use. My glossary entry, however, reflects all those that are right.
THANK YOU! :)
María Eugenia Wachtendorff (asker) Jul 26, 2008:
Hi, Parrot! Great to find you online! I'm pasting the remaining steps. ("Enable" sounds more like it??) After the list of forms in 7:

PLEASE NOTE THAT I FIRST REPLACED "ITMS" WITH "XXXX" (CONFIDENTIALITY ISSUES, YOU KNOW) BUT THEN FAILED TO COMPLETE THE TASK.
I NEED TO MAKE THIS CLEAR, OR THE WHOLE THING WILL LOOK MORE UNINTELLIGIBLE :S

bring up/bring online

I really think these are almost synonyms for launch, but are more complete. the process of bringing a system/software program up can involve various actions, as well as launching.

I was in software companies, (both as a techie and in sales), for a long time, and both these terms would be used in this context.

I love Smarttrans, but the reference to "dejando fuera de producción los formularios" clearly shows that levantar is also a synonym for poner en produccion, in the sense of "start up", so in this case I dont think there is a suggestion of upload.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "And the winner is... ¡Teresa's "bring xxx online"!! xxoo"

disable (?)

If releasing doesn't work, will "disable" do the job? (I'm basing this on point 7).

you could work along the "enable/disable" tandem, yes.
Note from asker:
YES, YOU ARE RIGHT!!!!
Thanks anyway, Parrot. It takes an expert to clear these kinds of doubts. You and I "work" while Teresa specializes. Now, where did I read that Kudoz was no good in these cases? :D

launch (start)

levantar can have many meanings, but I think in this context it is used with the meaning "launch, start a programme"

More or less meaning 16 in the DRAE "Erigir, establecer, instituir."

http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltConsulta?TIPO_BUS=3&LEMA=lev...

I think it makes sense:
2. Levantar los servicios de coexistencia en el ambiente de producción.

This means they want to launch these services in production context, i.e. these systems are new and they want to test them in a real production situation.

3. Levantar el ITMS en ambiente de producción.

(Same as 2.)

7. Levantar los sistemas IT y VAT dejando fuera de producción los formularios:

To launch these new (IT, VAT) systems, thus disabling the (old) forms.

I really appreciate your enthusiastic comment, María Eugenia :-D I spent almost two years translating and localizing accounting software as in-house translator and that´s given me some experience, but believe me, I´m not a goddess and I´m not perfect :-))

To help other colleagues, I think the best option is to close the question AND add an entry to the glossary. Maybe you want to wait for a couple of days to see if somebody else has a better suggestion for "levantar" in this context, but leaving the question open for too long doesn´t benefit other colleagues, at least on the long run, simple because they won´t follow the link on Kudoz if they don´t see it closed.
Note from asker:
TERESA, YOU ARE A GODDESS!!!! I JUST CHECKED A PREVIOUS TRANSLATION I DID FOR THIS CLIENT (SOURCE DOCUMENT BY ANOTHER PROGRAMMER) AND FOUND "LANZAR" IN A SIMILAR CONTEXT. I WILL LEAVE THE QUESTION OPEN JUST TO HAVE OTHER COLLEAGUES BENEFIT FROM YOUR BRILLIANT ANSWER :)

Thanks A!
agree Jennifer Levey : Absolutely right. And an IT boffin would likely say 'bring XXX up', just like his Spanish-speaking counterpart.
3 hrs
That´s right, thank you!
agree Andy Watkinson : As someone who's spent the past 10 years in Mgmt & Hi Tech Consulting, this is definitely it. "Implement" (the dreaded word) could also be a possibility.

Ten years, wow! That IS experience :-)) Thanks for your support, Andy!
