I'm with Mr Murray and Shera... it must be a valve, as it has a hole, for its purpose, otherwise it should not be called a valve and would not do what it does!!

Not so romantic These devices are usually 'valves' as opposed to 'seals' - because, let's face it, the entire packing is doing the sealing. The idea behind these valves is to let off the carbon dioxide that builds up in coffee grinds and beans, and to 'blow them off' without letting air back in - a type of valve called a check valve. In the coffee industry they are called 'degassing valves.' But degassing and check valves just don't cut it romanticaly. A seal would hold back something. I'm wonderig if I should post 'flavour buttons' answer. I hope someone will see what I mean that it's not a seal - because the if the package seals it too, why would you add a hole to the package and put a valve as well? I'll stop here...the dead horse ain't gonna go.

It sounds like you're the expert! "Aroma seal" actually is a Folger's trade mark but I guess it has become a more widespread term.

true - you just need to add valve to "aroma seal", or to "flavour lock" and that conveys the concept well.

To store: The flavour and aroma of coffee is affected by contact with air. Waitrose coffee beans are sold with a one-way valve to allow the coffee to be packed directly after roasting to protect the coffee and maintain its freshness. Keep for up to 1 year in a cool dark place. Once opened, seal the pack and place in an airtight container and store in a cool place, fridge or freezer to prolong the freshness of the beans for up to 1 month.
