This is a mathematical unit. It does sound weird, and it is supposed to. It is like man-hour.

This is how the term works mathematically:

You have 100 beds at the hotel (or hospital), and 7 nights in each week. This week, 90 beds were occupied 5 nights, and 98 beds were occupied on the 6th night, and 100 beds were occupied on the 7th night. Therefore you have:

90X5 = 450 bed nights
+ 98 bed nights
+ 100 bed nights

Total: 450 + 98 + 100 = 648 bed nights
