This is Peruvian Spanish but I think the name is universal. It's some sort of industrial sewing machine and appears in a list of other industrial sewing machines. It's made by Union Special.

I wasn't able to find just "serradora" under sewing machines. If it is the same as "codo" serradora, what kind of stitch it is probably isn't as important as the machine configuration that leaves one side open. The models seemed to vary in the number of bobbins they carried but I seem to remember 2-3, so there are probably specialized models that are used for all kinds of complicated stitches.

I think the serradora is a chain stitch machine.

Yes, I'm trying to find an exact match for serradora but the nature of the machines makes it difficult to be certain.

To Jenni I was guessing it might be this but wanted some sort of external confirmation, I can find pictures of 'bastera' machines but haven't been able to find a multi-lingual site with translation to English.

A "bastera" is a machine that does invisible stitching, also known as blindstitching:

These were originally made by the Lewis Invisible Stitch Company, which was taken over by Union Special. In 1968 the United States Blind Stitch Machine Corporation sued Union Special for patent infringement:

"Until 1958 defendant did not have a blind stitch machine in its line of sewing machines. In 1958 defendant acquired the assets of the Lewis Invisible Stitch Machine Co. and the Columbia Sewing Machine Corp., manufacturers of blind stitch machines."

Anyway, Union Special's "bastera", or at least one of them, is the 150-2 model:

Thanks Charles! I think this is probably right becasue the ads for the machines under this name also mention the use of invisible nylon thread.
