Active Handcuff Technique

A Security Officer will use the Passive Handcuff Technique when a subject is non-compliant. Normally there will be insufficient time for correct set up and the officer may find that he could be involved with a struggle with the subject as he attempts to prepare his handcuffs. In any event the technique will invariably involve a takedown and the technique should be applied as follows:

• Communication – the Security Officer will most likely find that the communication process has already gone past the reasonable stage.
• Apply First Handcuff – at the first opportunity the Security Officer will most probably have find that he may be grappling or struggling with the subject before being able to apply the first handcuff. In the event that he is able to set up before applying the handcuffs then the normal set up should apply.
• ***Takedown*** - once the first gate has been applied to the wrist, the Security Officer maintains a grip on the handcuffs with his master hand and places the non – master hand against the top of the handcuff applied to the wrist. He then simultaneously pushes against the cuff with the non-master hand, whilst pulling on unattached portion of the handcuff, with the master hand. At the same time he exerts downward pressure which will force the subject to the ground.
• Apply Second Handcuff – once the subject has been taken down to the ground, the Security Officer should apply an arm bar lock by rotating the handcuffed hand rearward and placed in the center of the subjects back. Once the subject is secure, the officer then communicates to the subject and the second cuff is applied.
• Apply Tension – tension is then checked and adjusted by slipping a finger between the wrist and the cuff and adjusting the handcuffs accordingly. This process is repeated on the other wrist.
• Double Lock – if the handcuffs used have a double lock mechanism this should be now applied.
