G'day everyone

What does "newly diagnosed" mean? What is the essential thing that causes a "newly diagnosed" person to be no longer "newly diagnosed"? If a clinical study is limited to patients who are "newly diagnosed" with disease X, what does that mean? Does it mean "diagnosed recently" or does it perhaps mean "diagnosed for the first time" or does it perhaps mean "rediagnosed", or perhaps something else?

Thanks

Selected answer:very recently diagnosed
Explanation:
and probably for the first time.

As this is still a subjective term, I would imagine that a scientific study woule define these parameters better within the paper itself, i.e. "newly diagnosed means the diagnosis should be dated no more than x days from the beginning of the study" or some such thing.

agree  jccantrell: Yep, for the first time and recently, I'd say. From then on, it would just be added notes on the chart. Rediagnosed would show up as a recurrence of the condition, not 'newly diagnosed,' imo.

treatment-naive

Explanation:

The significance of being newly diagnosed is not strictly connected with the amount of time which has passed since diagnosis but with the fact that the patient has not previously been treated/received drugs for the condition concerned.
