Ik kwam net de Franse term (uit België, maar ik denk in Franktijk ook) tegen in een vragenlijst: femme/homme au foyer. Daarom ook de nogal vreemde vertaling van de premie waar ik het over had. Zelfs als de persoon die dit attest heeft ingevuld Nederlands kent, als het ergens in een gemeente was waar veel Frans gesproken werd, kan het zeker dat je zulke vreemde termen tegenkomt in België. Ik dacht dat die situatie voor referentie wel eens interessant zou kunnen zijn. Tenzij de asker eens wil posten waar dat attest echt vandaan kwam. ;)
de premie hieronder werd afgeschaft in de jaren vijftig en veranderd in het kinderbijslagsysteem, maar moet daarna weer terug zijn ingevoerd. Ik zei al dat ik het zag voorbijkomen op een moederforum in 2007, maar in 2009 was het alweer voorbij. Ik weet ook niet wat het net inhoudt. Hetgene wat er bedoeld wordt is dat je ten laste bent van je man/werkende echtgenote (tegenwoordig ;)) en dat je daarbij nog een symbolische uitkering krijgt. In die forumposting was dat 350 € waarvan ze elk jaar 50 € aftrokken. Maar tenzij het hier daarom gaat, blijft het een vreemde aanduiding voor 'beroep', al is het dan housewife.
Er was blijkbaar kort een uitkering voor thuisblijvende moeders in België (misschien daarna omgezet naar een andere regeling, ik zag de moeder aan de haard nog voorbijkomen op het 9Maand-forum in 2007 ivm de RVA) die de 'moeder aan de haard' premie heette. . Misschien staat het daarom op het document (we weten nog altijd niet wat dat document dan wel exact is). Een gewone naam voor het beroep huisvrouw is het zeker niet.
Maar als het Vlaams is dan zijn we een stuk verder. Dan weten we dat het over een huisvrouw gaat, wisten we al. Alleen die huisvrouw figureert hier onder de betiteling 'vrouw bij de haard'
als we het woord 'huisvrouw' niet willen gebruiken, maar het gaat niet zo ver dat we het zouden invullen op een certificaat/attest of zoiets. Er is een verschil tussen artikeltjes op een blog, in magazines zoals Klasse of zoiets en een officieel document, toch? Ik denk dat zelfs mijn ouders (nu 64 en 59) vreemd zouden opkijken in deze context. Mijn mening, het zou kunnen dat ik fout ben hoor... Huisvrouw geeft 2 miljoen hits, "aan de haard" 224000 en "vrouw bij de haard" 55000 waarvan een deel met beschrijvingen van vrouwen bij haarden. Gewoon om een idee te geven hoe weinig die uitdrukking gebruikt wordt in vergelijking met huisvrouw. Het is niet dat ik de uitdrukking vreemd vind, het is dat ik het gebruik op zulk document raar vind, tenzij het iets echt regionaals is dat 'in de Vlaanders' gebruikt wordt. Een Brabantse klucht, inderdaad. :)
Suppose it is Flemish. Then it would be interesting to know why she used these words in a police certificate and how this expression should be translated into an English equivalent.
I suppose not every Flemish 'huisvrouw' is called a 'vrouw bij de haard' after all.
We already knew this was about a housewife, this is not new. The asker mentioned it, Natasha and Lianne van de Ven.
Hmm. I know I do tend to think that everything weird must be Belgian, but just run a search and see how many .be hits you get with: "aan de haard" vrouw
Especially if you try: a Google search for: vrouw "aan de haard" belgian housewives
I even get Belgian hits if I change it to: vrouw "aan de haard" nederlands housewives
Er zijn in ieder geval Belgen die zich zo uitdrukken en nu dit eenmaal naar voren is gebracht zo ik haast denken dat het Belgisch (d.w.z. Vlaams) klinkt ook, echt dat gemoedelijke.

2. Vrouw bij de haard. Veel grollen gaan over de rol van de vrouw die eigenlijk thuis bij de haard is. Bij de minste fout krijgen vrouwen dan de verborgen en humoristisch bedoelde boodschap dat ze eigenlijk toch beter kunnen afwassen en thuis voor de kinderen zorgen. Op die manier houden mannen de ondergeschiktheid van het werk van de vrouw in stand.
I was born in Belgium and stayed in it until I was 26. Never heard this thing in my life apart from, as I said, in a derogatory way to blame parties who are too conservative, i.e. wanting all women at the hearth again. 'bij de haard' looks also a little strange to me, because normally it is 'aan de haard', so I tend to think it could be from the Netherlands somewhere. But to me, this thing sounds so weird that it could be from another era. If it used to be a code word for woman living with man out of wedlock (whether because he was a priest or no), then it could be from last century some time, but without the asker coming back, we'll never know. Aching to see what it will be :).
Barend, is dat we het niet weten, omdat we geen context hebben. En ja, ik weet wat een PC is, maar wie weet bedoelde vrager iets anders... We weten het niet. Want we hebben geen context.

de vrouw in kwestie beheerst het Nederlands niet goed en gaf een omschrijving die door de ambtenaar uit arren moede maar als 'vrouw bij de haard' werd geinterpreteerd :)

Enne... wie zegt dat het een 'verklaring van goed gedrag' is? Zou kunnen, maar het kan ook iets heel anders zijn; ik vind "Police certificate" nogal ruim ;-))
zoals gedefinieerd in mijn context kan vier betekenissen hebben, niet alleen 'concubine'. Haarddame, dame bij de haard, vrouw bij de haard - voor al deze termen vind je het woord 'focaria' terug, dus het lijkt me geenszins voorbarig en ook niet onwaarschijnlijk dat haarddame en vrouw bij de haard op hetzelfde neerkomen.

housekeeper would make sense; but again: without proper context it's anybody's guess. Anyway, I enjoyed searching the term - had never heard of 'vrouw bij de haard' before.
whatever the reason why this ended up in a police certificate (and asker has not been very generous with context ;-) ) I find it an interesting term ;-)
It appears to stem from focarius (kitchen boy), which again stems from focus (hearth/fireplace).
In the old days, the duties of a focaria apparently could include more than housekeeping:
"Zij hielden er in strijd met hun kerkelijke verplichtingen een huisgenote of 'haarddame' op na, wier taken niet beperkt bleven tot huishoudelijke besognes [...]"

is someone who cleans the house, usually for a living: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Housekeeper_(servant). I'm *assuming* this is not what is meant here. Then again, she deliberately put down 'vrouw bij de haard' - which is unusual and has certain connotations, rather than 'huisvrouw' - so it's hard to know the tone, humoristic as Barend suggests? If we simply put 'housewife' or similar, we might be missing her intentions.
A penny for the thoughts of the woman who phrased her occupation like this.
Think about it, someone saying about themselves:
Ik ben een vrouw bij de haard (rather than: Ik ben huisvrouw)
My guess would be, it was meant humorously.
At least, I think it's humorous.
To me, in this context, police certificate, 'vrouw bij de haard' sounds 'warmer' than 'huisvrouw'. Also realize, almost everyone else would fill in just: huisvrouw. This means, this woman made an original move. It must have pleased her.
I thought they only still used this expression for housewife, i.e. 'woman at the hearth', for denigrating purposes to try and bring conservative political parties in a difficult situations in the press. If it's an occupation, definitely housewife.
Definitely not 'ladies who lunch' in this context (police certificate - whatever that may be, but it sounds formal). Simply housewife - or homemaker if US preferred.

Just to make this clear: I added all the terms because they are included on the Wiki page and elsewhere and leaving them out would be incomplete, imo. I intended to provide a translation of 'vrouw bij de haard'. I understand that in a police report, the correct translation will probably be 'housekeeper'.

Explanation: Without further context it's hard to say for sure but I assume what is meant here is "huisvrouw". In US English, the former term "housewife" has been replaced by the much nicer sounding "homemaker".
