While articulation usually refers to eloquent expression, I believe that the intended meaning in this sentence is different. The term here refers to pronounced words as a verbal employment of voice compared to primitive language employing other senses to produce gestures and signs. In that sense, even simple verbal words would be considered sophisticated in comparison to other forms of expression. Had the term not be used, vocal sound alone could have also meant sighing, screaming, and other forms of primitive vocal expression.
