Department of Family Services & Solidarity Office Thank you both. Yes, it was indeed a mouthful! 160 word sentence in Spanish (with errors)! I used "office" for "ventanilla." I agree with using "Department" vs. "Ministry" for a document that will be used in the U.S. These choices come down to foreignization vs. naturalization. As long as it conveys the same meaning, I am satisfied with either approach. Welfare has connotations in English that I could not justify after reviewing the department's website. I appreciate everyone's input.

That sure is a mouthful! And it goes on and on, giving the complete name of the region and so on! The glossary doesn't give the meaning I would ascribe to "ventanilla" here -- office. (Nicaragua also has *ventanillas unicas* but those are different.) Since your translation is for the US, consider using "Department" instead of "Ministry." Canada and the UK have ministries, but not the US. Personally, I am fine with "Solidarity." The term still used in socialist contexts, so to me it sounds fine when the country in question was under socialist rule for decades.

Hi Anna Welcome to KudoZ.
You need to check the glossary before you post questions, as we've had "ventanilla" in this context many times before.
You also asked about "solidaridad" - this sounds like "welfare" to me, but you could find out by checking their website. "Solidarity" doesn't really work as a translation.

Spanish term (edited): Ministerio de la Familia y la Solidaridad Ventanilla
Selected

Department of Family Affairs and Solidarity (Drop-in) Centre

Ventanilla in Nicaragua seems to be more-or-less a "window" where one queues to get service from a clerk/Govt official. So, in the context of Solidarity, my best guess is that it's actually some sort of Social Welfare office where one can go without an appointment and queue. But how best to express that?

Or maybe "Social Solidarity"?
Note from asker:
Thank you for providing me with links and for your suggestions. I did use Department and Solidarity. Department of Family Affairs and Solidarity Office.. time to sleep on it!
