German term

Pflanzung

German to English Other Botany Horticulture
This is about a competition between florists, one of the disciplines being "Pflanzung". I had to cadge this from (c) Wikipedia:
"Als Pflanzung wird die Tätigkeit bezeichnet, die aus Saat- oder Pflanzgut vorgezogene Jungpflanzen (Setzlinge) an deren endgültigen Standort in Garten, Acker, Weinberg oder Wald so in den Boden einsetzt, dass ein Anwachsen der Pflanzen gewährleistet ist."

Discussion

Yorkshireman Aug 8, 2014:
Planting/creative planting/decorative pot plant "High-end hotels and restaurants too have started to embrace the possibilities of creative planting indoors and outdoors. “The planting side is often overlooked,” says Ian. “There can be amazing floristry inside, but just a couple of bay trees outside. It is not creative at all. We do a lot of clever work to complement the brand of hotel.” Word spreads in the hotel industry, it seems, and the recommendations flowed."

Another article, same magazine, about a show in Essen, Germany:
"During the IPM 2013, the creative people in the horticultural industry will be meeting again to measure themselves against each other in this combination competition. What is required are the most beautiful works in the categories "Bouquet", "Decorative Pot Plant" and "Tub Planting". In addition, the best trainees in each category will receive a special prize.
The IPM Fair Cup is organised jointly by the German Florists' Association, National Association of Retail Gardeners and Central Horticultural Association and hosted by Messe Essen."

Tub planting may be a bit too big.
Yorkshireman Aug 8, 2014:
I think,... ... we might actually be able to get away with a simple "planting"
Heike Holthaus Aug 8, 2014:
Composing a plant arrangement maybe?
Yorkshireman Aug 8, 2014:
in Szene setzen Thanks for not asking us to translate this - it's nearly as bad as anspruchsvoll and inszenieren :-)
Marketing-Lang. (asker) Aug 8, 2014:
Info from customer: die Finalisten arbeiten an einer Pflanze. Also keine Schnittblumen, sondern eine besondere Art, eine Pflanze in Szene zu setzen.
Yorkshireman Aug 7, 2014:
@T-Heike Yes, I'm sure you are right - the last couple of references I found seem to confirm that (even "bring your own orchids and succulents") - although, someone has to plant those floral decorations in parks and gardens as well :-)

After ploughing through the Web looking for and at Pflanzungen, I'm almost certain that it will be "container planting" (artistic/creative/decorative/ornamental or something similar)

Goodnight from Hannover
Heike Holthaus Aug 7, 2014:
@Yorkshireman I think you are on the right track, though it's probably containers that are planted/arranged according to various themes (herbs, succulents, ...)
Marketing-Lang. (asker) Aug 7, 2014:
"Im Rahmen einer Pflanzung ... ... sollen die vielfältigen Auswirkungen (des jeweiligen Themas) veranschaulicht werden."
See my problem ;-)
I'll have to talk to the customer tomorrow.
Thanks again, all!
philgoddard Aug 7, 2014:
If it's a headline, what does it say underneath?
Yorkshireman Aug 7, 2014:
@Asker I hope so:-)

BTW: the man behind the last reference I posted on Pflanzung is Stefan Göttle, Vizemeister der Deutschen Meisterschaft der Floristen 2012
Marketing-Lang. (asker) Aug 7, 2014:
Brilliant input Thanks to you all.
@Brigitte: I only have the one word as a headline, but the general context is a competition to establish the best *florist*.
@ Yorkshireman: You might just be on the right track there, sir!
Yorkshireman Aug 7, 2014:
@Brigitte The asker found one definition of "Pflanzung" in Wikipedia and asked us all if it is right in the context of a competition between florists - that is context enough.

There is another meaning, which is used by florists, as a number (if not all) of my references indicate - in gardens and in containers/pots/troughs or whatever of all kinds.

As ornamental flower beds are "Pflanzungen", this is a perfectly valid answer - as are my other (validated) alternatives.
BrigitteHilgner Aug 7, 2014:
@ Yorkshireman The asker quoted Wikipedia (... Tätigkeit ...) so I assumed that this quote is relevant (maybe it isn't). As long as the asker cannot be bothered to provide some meaningful context I won't get involved in any discussion.
Yorkshireman Aug 7, 2014:
@Brigitte If you take a moment or two to take a look at the references I posted, you will see that Pflanzung is not exclusively what Wikipedia says it is - it can be in beds (Rabatte) or in containers of all kinds (Gefäße) - the point is that the plants are growing, not cut.

The simplest Pflanzung I can think of here in Germany is one of those "Lucky Clovers" in a pot with a chimney sweep on a stick.
Yorkshireman Aug 7, 2014:
@Phil It may well also be the decorative planting of pots, vases, containers as well as floral borders/beds or whatever - it definitely isn't flower arranging/floral arrangements (Gestecke). I just posted a spate of references under my answer.
philgoddard Aug 7, 2014:
You haven't really explained what this competition is, but if it's between florists, I would assume it's flower arranging and has nothing to do with flower beds. Florists work with cut flowers.
What are the other disciplines?
BrigitteHilgner Aug 7, 2014:
@ asker As long as you don't provide a full sentence, it's anyone's guess.
You quote Wikipedia and there it says "Tätigkeit" - "ornamental flower beds" are not a Tätigkeit.
Roger Matthews Aug 7, 2014:
Yorkshireman has a good point... The other Wikipedia definition for Pflanzung (Rabatte) is:
Der Begriff Pflanzung bezeichnet kleinere Ziergrünflächen.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pflanzung_(Rabatte)

Which I would call a "decorative border" - as you would see at the Chelsea Flower Show for example. Seems far more likely with reference to florists.
Yorkshireman Aug 7, 2014:
@Brigitte + Heike The key word here is florists - I'm reasonably certain that Pflanzung is not about planting out seedlings to grow mature plants (mature enough for selling), which is what gardeners and horticulturalists do, but more about "Pflanzung" as, for example, a flower bed or a decorative arrangement of growing plants to show the creative skills of a florist.
BrigitteHilgner Aug 7, 2014:
I agree with TranslatorHeike http://www.linguee.de/deutsch-englisch/uebersetzung/pflanzun...
but admittedly, depending on your sentence (you don't provide any context) you might want to use a verb which speaks for Roger Matthews' suggestion.
Heike Holthaus Aug 7, 2014:
Why not simply "planting"?

ornamental flower beds

As this is about the skills of florists rather than gardeners, I think the above gets closest to Pflanzungen - the decorative (ornamental) use of plants to create patterns, pictures (often coats of arms), floral clocks etc.

At a pinch, ornamental planting would fit the bill, too.

Here's an example of the use of "Pflanzung":

There is obviously a helluva lot more than flower arranging and selling if you want to qualify as a florist - take a look at page 12 of this flyer.

Mathematics rules me out from the start :-)
