When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

: there is no reason why the "substance à surveiller" couldn't be already known for centuries, especially if it's part of "préparations traditionnelles"; what is "experimental" is the new préparation/formulation

Actually, an experimental substance does not need to be a new substance simply the element that is being experimented upon, the experiment as oposed to the control. I do not believe you understood what I meant.
