spotless havens Explanation: I understand "escudas" to mean "sheltered places/spaces" (not a typo for 'escuelas') One word for this is "haven" (noun) -> a place of safety or refuge. Synonyms: refuge, retreat, shelter, sanctuary, asylum, place of safety, place of security, port in a storm, harbour, oasis, sanctum "a safe haven in times of trouble" an inlet providing shelter for ships or boats; a harbour or small port. synonyms: anchorage, harbour, port, mooring, roads; More -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 18 hrs (2016-03-30 12:08:39 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Spotless (adjective) -> absolutely clean or pure; immaculate. "a spotless white apron" synonyms: perfectly clean, ultra-clean, pristine, immaculate, shining, shiny, gleaming, spick and span; without faults or moral blemishes; pure. synonyms: unblemished, unsullied, untarnished, untainted, unstained, pure, as pure as the driven snow, whiter than white, lily-white, flawless, immaculate, impeccable, faultless, blameless, guiltless, sinless, unimpeachable, irreproachable, above reproach; More -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 18 hrs (2016-03-30 12:09:39 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- In fact, now I prefer "pristine havens" (604 Google results)... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 18 hrs (2016-03-30 12:10:19 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "Unsullied" is nice too, but I think it was recently used in Game of Thrones... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 20 hrs (2016-03-30 14:16:13 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- @spanruss: I didn't find my definition of 'escudas' anywhere, it's simply how I understand it from the context and the evident similarity to escudo/escudar. 'Escudar' is defined in the DRAE as "Resguardar y defender a alguien del peligro que lo amenaza.", which I think neatly describes what a haven or place of safety does. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 20 hrs (2016-03-30 14:19:26 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- PS: Plus, I think "spacious, pristine havens" works nicely in the context: "Your old and venerable palaces shall become spacious, pristine havens, where children's minds learn to escape/evade the yoke of Vice." (Or words to that effect). |
