Medical (general)
I initially thought about "cicatrização", however, in this same text I'll use "cicatrização" as a translation for "healing". And the problem is healing seems to be something good, but scarring, not.
Context: "Idiopathic pulmonar fibrosis is characterized by interstitial fibrosis, which typically results in chronic irreversible scarring"

A cicatrização, enquanto processo de cura de um ferimento, é de facto uma coisa boa. Muitas vezes, esse ferimento, embora cicatrize, deixa uma marca para muito tempo ou par sempre, e isso é mau de facto. É a chamada cicatriz.

cicatrização excessiva/formação de tecido conjuntivo excessiva
I will post two suggestions here. The first one follows the comment I made in the discussion, and the second one is a description that would fit for pulmonary fibrosis, but I do not know if it would be ok for all instances of scarring.

cicatrização crônica/crónica/cronica
Discussion
Actually, the two process are the same. What happens is that scar tissue is less soft, hence in more flexible organs, like the lungs, it will have a bad effect.
Also, you could say cicatriza excessiva, this would no doubt refer to a bad effect.
