Observe que há um fluxo principal (mainstream), que segue pelo tubo maior, e um fluxo secundário (lateral, sidestream), que sai por um tubo menor ao passar pelo amostrador (sampling adapter).
Um "closed sidestream sampler" é simplesmente um amostrador em que a saída lateral está bloqueada para impedir perdas.
