The upper chain (at the top of the sprockets) is supported for the entire
length of the conveyor by a parallel, end-to-end angle-irons, called
"return" rails. The lower chain is supported by the bottom of the trough.
Bulk material is dumped into the trough at inlet openings. It flows between
the return rails and comes to rest on the bottom of the trough. There, it is
dragged by the lower, or "loaded" chain.
The flights on the loaded chain drag material along the bottom of the trough. This takes place from inlet openings on the top of the cover, to the
discharge outlet at the "head section," or to intermediate discharge gates
in the bottom of the trough. Material is discharged from the trough at these
openings.
In some situations a solid plate of metal, the full width of the trough, is
used to replace the angle-iron return rails. This effectively divides the
trough into upper and lower sections. The plate, or "pan" prevents material
from flowing directly from inlets at the top into the bottom of the trough.
For this reason, any bolt-in plate which is the full width of the trough is
called a "divider pan."
Divider pans are used to limit the amount of material which can enter the
conveyor. They are also used on conveyors installed on an incline, to
prevent material from flowing backward down the column of material on the
incline. They may also be used where an inlet on the top of the conveyor is
located close to a discharge opening on the bottom. The pan would then
prevent uncontrolled flow of material in-and-out of the trough between the
two points. Because pans serve essential control functions, our instructions warn the user not to remove them without careful consideration.
