From the transl agency's Ts and Cs. This is the first sentence under "Leistungen" and it's very tricky to render.

My current attempt follows below, but any suggestions for improvement are welcome. I'm happy with EN "text" for "Wortlaut" - "text" can be used in that way for any size chunk of language in translation studies. It's the phrasing of the whole sentence I'm more concerned about.

"Aufgabe des Sprachmittlers ist die sprachlich und fachlich richtige Wiedergabe eines gegebenen Wortlautes in einer anderen Sprache."

MY VERSION SO FAR:
"The language service provider's responsibility consists of the accurate conversion of both the linguistic aspects of a given text and its content into another language."

agree  Richard Benham: I like "rendition", but I think the rest needs work. I know there's a problem--I can't think of a linguistically and subject-matter-wisely correct again-giving myself! But "rendition" seems a good option for "Wiedergabe", none the less.

Perhaps:

"includes" instead of "consists" (unless that is ALL the service provider has to do - and I do mean this literally).

You might just go for 'Plain English' and use something in a more active voice like "...provider is obligated to convert a given ... both linguistically and contextually correct." (that way you also avoid an apostrophe) or "It is the ... provider's responsibility...".

I chose "contextually" for "fachlich", because I think that is what is meant - getting it right in the correct context (i.e. business jargon, legal jargon etc.).

Those are just a couple of 'thoughts'; take them or leave them - your version sounds fine to me. :-)

Forget what I said about \"Plain English\" (mine isn\'t either). Somehow the word \"correct\" didn\'t work out like I was thinking and \"contextually correctly\" sounds even more off the wall.

Perhaps something like \"...obligated to provide a linguistically and contextually correct conversion of...\". ;-)

In fact I kind of like that last one. In most contracts the parties receive a capitalized abbreviation, i.e. XXX or YYY. If so, you could avoid \"language service provider\":

\"XXX is obligated to provide a linguistically correct and professional conversion/translation of a given text into another language.\" :-)

Explanation:
'sprachlich richtig' and 'fachlich richtig' don't fall into such a neat juxtaposition in English, because of the lack of a catch-all counterpart for 'fachlich'.

I agree with the suggestion of 'linguistically accurate' on the one hand, and would pair it with 'technically competent' to try to capture more of the meaning of 'fachlich richtig' (getting the content right, but also the technical expertise applied to the task, resulting in a professional standard of work).
