In Spanish this means that they worked AS IF they liked the work so much that they don't mind not getting paid for it, only they didn't know at the time that they were not gooing to get paid for it.
The literal translation of it doesn't make sense here: "later we realized that we had worked for the pleasure of it" Did they become aware of their pleasure only after they fonish the work???
