Этимология очевидна - автогонки, где pit - это место техобслуживания на трассе (смена колес, заправка и т.п), иначе говоря, пит-стоп. А смысл выражения IMHO в том, что пилот может обслуживаться только в своем пит-стопе, заезд в чужой - грубое нарушение правил, влекущее за собой дисквалификацию.
