La cianotipia es un sistema de impresión negativo positivo. Fue inventado en 1842 por Sir. John Herschel, basándose en su descubrimiento de que determinadas sales de hierro eran sensibles a la luz.

El nombre fue elegido por el fondo intenso azul (del griego cyanos, azul oscuro) sobre el que aparece una imagen blanca (o el color blanco del papel de soporte). Fue también conocido con el nombre de proceso al ferroprusiato, porque el color lo da el compuesto llamado azul de Prusia o ferrocianuro férrico.

Los cianotipos pueden obtenerse tanto a partir de negativos comunes como de dibujos o reproducciones en materiales transparentes o traslucidos. El original actúa como un negativo. En el cianotipo, los elementos oscuros aparecerán claros, y los claros se verán oscuros. Las soluciones químicas para la sensibilización del papel o de las telas son fáciles de preparar y utilizar. No se necesita revelado en el proceso básico; la imagen aparece directamente y se convierte en permanente mediante un lavado con agua.
