AllegroTrans Sep 10, 2007:
FROM KUDOZ RULES: 2.4 :Sufficient context must be provided with each question. When there is no context, the subject area and type of document should be indicated. It can be helpful to enter sentences or paragraphs where the term in question occurs
AllegroTrans Sep 10, 2007:
I think you cxan see from the answers already (anything from "coin toss" to "drawing by lots") - none of which I am criticising - that we need CONTEXT
AllegroTrans Sep 10, 2007:
Exactly - we need to see context and how the term fits into your orig. text - can you provide this essential info please, otherwise any answers are likely to be just guesswork
Elizabeth Slaney Sep 10, 2007:
How term is translated depends on context. Do you have full sentence and what text is talking about?

draw lots

the process of drawing lots

depends on your context - you may be able to use a verbal construction: to draw lots. Alternatively the process itself is called 'drawing lots'.
Peer comment(s):

agree David Goward : Or possibly just "the draw" in the context of sports competitions, for example.

Thanks! Yes, some context would be nice...
neutral AllegroTrans : or "lucky dip" perhaps?// a "neutral" does not penalise an answer, as it is neither a plus nor a minus....all I am pointing out is that as we we have no context, we are all really making guesses, albeit they may very well be excellent guesses

not sure why you're 'penalising' answerers with a 'neutral' comment when you yourself point out the need for context!

raffle

without context, this is what I understand
Peer comment(s):

neutral David Goward : Although impossible to say without context, I think this is unlikely. The usual French terms for "raffle" are "tombola" or "bourriche".

neutral AllegroTrans : or maybe "divination by spirit media" - the asker needs to give us CONTEXT

random draw / coin toss

depending on your context, of course (coin toss for sport-related)
Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : or even reading tea-leaves (what I am saying, joking apart. is that we have no CONTEXT)

agree PB Trans : random draw
