La intervención adhesiva simple se caracteriza porque el tercero solicitante de la intervención, no defiende un derecho propio, sino que sostiene o sustenta la posición de una de las partes del proceso, es decir, defiende un derecho ajeno, cuya titularidad se atribuye o bien a la parte activa o pasiva, dependiendo de a cual de ellas se adhiera
Intervención adhesiva litisconsorcial:
La intervención adhesiva litisconsorcial defiende derechos propios, y la sentencia le afecta de manera directa, pudiendo ser estimada la pretensión ejercitada (litisconsorcio activo) o condenada (litisconsorcio pasivo)

For some reason, the program won't allow me to respond to Tom's comment, so I will do so here. Obviously, the "defensor judicial" is not exactly the same as a McKenzie Friend (we are comparing two different systems, and no equivalents actually exist), but it is perhaps the closest equivalent. But regardless of the relationship defensor judicial-McKenzie Friend, the role of a McKenzie Friend does not correspond to the definition of "intervención". The interviniente enters a proceeding to protect his own interests, not those of one of the litigants (the interviniente "tiene interés directo y legítimo en el resultado del pleito").
