No pense que era necesario un contexto el texto dice asi: "Segun me informaran, la primer letra del nombre identificaba el archivo, pero no es posible asegurarlo con certeza"
Stuart Allsop Nov 9, 2004:
Amen, Jane!
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Nov 9, 2004:
I just don't understand how a translator doesn't understand that lack of context results in gibberish...it could be MANY THINGS..among which "say so definitively.."
Stuart Allsop Nov 9, 2004:
Depends on what sense you are using "asegurar"! Is this about insurance? Or about Assurance?

....we cannot be certain that the first letter in the name identifies the file, even though we were informed that it did.
or.....even though we were informed that the first letter in the name identifies the file, we cannot be certain of this.

They tell me that the first letter of the name identifies the file, but this cannot be confirmed.

Context always makes a difference! At least we now know that it wasn't talking about a refusal of life insurance.

It's a matter of written style. My answer was offered before the context was given.

but I cannot say so for sure...or there is no way to tell for sure

The guy to WHOM this is told is doing the "assegurando" right..

he means he was told one thing and he can't say for sure that is true

IDIOM= assegurar con certeza

TO SAY SO FOR SURE..and not anything with ASSURE in English!

See how context matters in every little thing?

Please be careful of LAtinized responses..

I can assure you that I am sure there will be many of them.

neutral Michele Fauble : I agree that a translator should only translate into his/her native language, which is why I only translate into English (my native language).
