You could say phased out, but that implies active decision-making which isn´t apparent from the sentence you gave. "Disappear" is not ideal, either, of course, and neither is redundant, but perhaps those might be something to work on?

: "Redundant" isn't going to be understood by Americans to be the same (except possibly among the Anglophiles. :-) ) I would use either "be phased out" or "eventually disappear" for an American audience.Substandard air brakes don't disappear on their own.
