Unlike our decimal system which uses units rising by a factor of 10 each time, the Sumerian system was sexagesimal or quasi base 60. The units of this rather strangely alternated by factors of 10, then 6, then 10 and so on. The place-digits thus ascended as follows :1, 10, 60, 600, 3600, 36000...

On passait d'une unité à la suivante en multipliant alternativement par 10 et par 6. Le chiffre 1 dans chaque position correspondait successivement à un, dix, soixante, six cents, trois mille six cents, etc.
