Casting guns became more precise. It was established that solid casting and then drilling the bore produced the soundest weapons. Jean Maritz and son invented the horizontal boring machine. The bit was held stationary as the barrel was turned and lowered onto it. Bronze guns were cast vertically to allow impurities to rise to the "deadhead", a section of the casting that was meant to be cut off for this reason. Iron ones cast horizontally, so the metal wasn't denser at the breech, causing a weak muzzle.
