Gate control theory
Check def. below
Stimulation of sensory nerve fibers can alleviate acute and chronic pain. The application of thermal or tolerably painful stimuli (e.g., via acupunctureneedles) has a long-standing tradition in pain therapy. Shortly after the for-mulation of the gate control theory (Melzack and Wall 1965), a new form of afferent stimulation was successfully introduced into clinical practice: theexcitation of thick, myelinated Aß fibers, either by transcutaneous electricalnerve stimulation (TENS), by dorsal column stimulation, or by mechanical exci-tation of sensory nerve endings during vibratory stimuli (Wall and Sweet 1967)

You may be wise to post this under "Technical" query or similar, as it's not strictly medical, though I know it's about a TENS machine.
BTW, I have come across "Wheatstone bridge" in the context of TENS..?? That's about as far as I can go with this one.
