4 +7 | new onset of atrial fibrillation/new symptoms of atrial fibrillation |
|
new onset of atrial fibrillation/new symptoms of atrial fibrillation Explanation: Most patients with new onset (ie, first episode) atrial fibrillation (AF) present with symptoms related to the arrhythmia. Typical symptoms include palpitations, a sense of the heart racing, fatigue, lightheadedness, increased urination, or mild shortness of breath. More severe symptoms and signs include dyspnea, angina, hypotension, presyncope, or infrequently syncope. In addition, some patients present with an embolic event or the insidious onset of right-sided heart failure (as manifested by peripheral edema, weight gain, and ascites). Except for embolization, the symptoms associated with new onset AF are primarily due to a rapid ventricular rate. http://www.uptodate.com/patients/content/topic.do?topicKey=~... |
